PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
Incumbent serves as a Public Works Technician for the Public Works Department and is responsible for operating City equipment and vehicles under the supervision of Department Foremen and performing various labor tasks.
This position is designated as a safety-sensitive role under DOT/FMCSA regulations due to the operation of commercial motor vehicles and heavy equipment. Employees in this classification are subject to mandatory compliance with the City’s Drug and Alcohol Policy, including pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion testing, and must maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC) as a condition of employment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Operate and perform preventative maintenance on various department equipment including rollers, skid steers, heavy duty trucks and related attachments for affecting the repair, reconstruction, or construction of various asphalt and concrete projects throughout the city
Performs labor tasks as a part of the construction crew not limited to shoveling, raking, luting, trimming, flatwork, and other related tasks under the general jurisdiction of the public works department
Loads, dumps, and shovels crushed stone, sand, and salt from trucks, and removes snow from City streets using appropriate equipment.
Removes debris such as leaves and sand from streets, sidewalks, drains, and alleys, using appropriate equipment.
Ability to demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in the following basic public works tasks
Medium to Heavy Duty Truck operation and preventative maintenance
Skid steer operation- load, unload, travel, transfer material, back up, work in confined area, sweep, mill, etc.
Roller operation- load, unload, travel, choose appropriate settings for water, vibration, and speed of operation, basic compaction
Basic Laborer skills- safe lifting, material transfer, debris removal, cleaning, hand tool use, hydraulic tool operation, asphalt and concrete temporary repairs.
Failure to safely perform these essential functions may result in removal from duty or disciplinary action.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs other duties as assigned consistent with public works functions
2. On call in case of emergencies and/or snow/ice/storm response.
Employee may be required to respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours and must maintain fitness for duty at all times to safely operate City vehicles and equipment.
